Karras Leather is a craftwork studio situated in Psiri – the area in Athens that used to be the industrial heart of leather goods. It’splaced just a few steps from Monastiraki Square in the centre of Athens. I discovered Karras studio one year ago during a hunt for leather gloves. When I noticed the studio window with the real vintage styled bags, exposed with their original shapes and unique colours, I simply couldn’t resist and entered. Nice atmosphere, a traditional approach and marvellous items –was my first impression.

The creations of Lyn Swan quickly gained my attention. Minimal and playful – her items are very original and whimsical and this collection in particular inspired by nature.

As Lyn notes in her online shop: “I was born to work in clay, ever since I remember I have been addicted to clay and been producing for over thirty five years .... yikes ..... that seems a long time, but time flies when you are having fun!” And it surely shows that the artist puts her heart in her pieces.

The Wannabes Project

I instantly fell in love with the original ‘Wannabes’ project by artist Deborah Brackenbury! Here plates play the role of canvas where imaginative compositions of taxidermy animal images are originally combined with traditional patterns, creating very stimulating and interesting pieces of art.

As the artist notes: “Sometimes I scan doll clothes into the computer, Barbie clothes being my favorite, and I dress the taxidermy animals in these outfits. The title Wannabes addresses our urge to create lives and stories for animals that represent our own desires. I have chosen to apply the images to vintage plates to reference the traditional commemorative plate. Each image is printed on a waterslide decal that is archival, smudge proof, waterproof, and fade resistant, and sealed onto the plate.”

And as if this is not enough, talented Deborah also has another stunning project where she designs concrete bowls and plates. Check out her “Impure Vessels” here.

“Beauty is a weapon” is the motto of Roman, the designer of “Harem Royal”, a gorgeous collection of goth – Victorian and steampunk inspired jewelry. I am particularly impressed by the amount of detail and craftsmanship of these pieces! It really shows that they were made with true passion and this – in my opinion, is very important!

As Roman notes: “Balancing between the Oriental need for seduction and Western hunger for power, Harem Royal aims at satisfying the clashing demands of women's secret desires”.

Check out Harem Royal on facebook and twitter too!
